What are the key differences between a psychologist, a counsellor, and a psychiatrist?Psychologists, counsellors, and psychiatrists provide individuals with resources and strategic plans to address emotional challenges and mental health conditions. Understanding the differences between these professions can help you identify which type of professional may best suit your needs. Psychologists are registered with AHPRA under the Psychology Board of Australia. To gain registration, they must complete a minimum of five years of accredited academic study, followed by a one-year internship, and successfully pass the National Psychology Exam. Psychologists are qualified to conduct psychological assessments and deliver evidence-based therapies. They are also recognised Medicare providers and can offer therapy sessions that may be eligible for reimbursement through private health insurance. Counsellors are accredited by professional bodies such as the Australian Counselling Association (ACA). They offer therapeutic support for personal, emotional, and social challenges, and may also work with private health insurers to provide rebates for sessions, depending on coverage. Psychiatrists are medical doctors registered with AHPRA. They specialise in diagnosing and treating complex and severe mental health conditions using a combination of medication and psychotherapy. Their services are often subsidised by Medicare or private health insurance.

How can I best prepare for my first session? Before your sessions begin, you will be asked to complete intake and consent forms, which include information about privacy and confidentiality. Ahead of your appointment, it can be helpful to consider what you would like to get out of psychological support. If you're unsure about your goals, you might find it useful to reflect on the ‘Miracle Question’: If a miracle occurred and your main concerns were resolved, what would be different in your life? Thinking about this can help clarify your goals, needs, and what you hope to change or achieve through therapy.
-
What should I expect during my first session?Attending your first session with a psychologist can be daunting, and it is very normal to feel nervous and even anxious about doing so. We will ensure a comfortable and supportive experience, taking time to understand your background and what led you to seek help. We will also discuss the confidentiality agreement and answer any questions about potential treatment.
-
How many sessions will typically be required?During your initial consultation, we will work with you to discuss the number and frequency of sessions, in alignment with your overall treatment plan. Assessments usually take approximately 5 sessions, including initial session, assessments, interpretation of results and action planning.
-
How can I maximise the benefits of my psychology sessions?Active participation and a collaborative approach with your psychologist will help you get the most out of your sessions. Some treatments may include activities or strategies to practise between appointments, and keeping brief notes on these experiences can support your progress. To maximise the benefits of your sessions, try to choose a time and space where you can be fully present and free from distractions.
-
Am I eligible for Medicare rebates? If you have Medicare, you may be eligible for rebates under the Better Access initiative. To access this support, you will first need a referral from your GP, known as a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). Most GPs require a longer (double) appointment to complete the plan, so it’s a good idea to check with your medical practice and book accordingly.
-
Can I use my private health insurance to cover these sessions? If you have private health insurance, many policies cover psychology sessions under extras or ancillary cover. You would need to check your specific policy to see if psychology is included and what the coverage limits are. For example, how many sessions per year and the maximum amount covered.
